FINANCIAL HELP

Help with your tuition fees
The cost of providing college and university courses is met mostly by the Government and partly by tuition fees charged to the students. Many students are entitled to help to pay some or all of their fees. Exactly how much you get depends on your income and that of your family and when you start your course. Students from families with low incomes currently pay no tuition at all.

2004/2005 - Here's what you could get:

  • If your household income is less than £21,475, you'll get ALL your tuition fees paid for you by the Government. So no worries there. Just remember you still have to apply.
  • If your household income is between £21,475 and around £32,000, you will get help towards your tuition fees. We'll work out exactly how much when you apply.
  • If your household income is over £32,000, you will be asked to pay the maximum fee contribution of £1,150.
  • From 2004, subject to Parliamentary scrutiny, students whose household income is £15,200 or less will also get a Higher Education Grant worth £1,000 a year. This non-repayable grant provides extra help for students to meet costs of going to college or university.

Can I get any other funding?

Help if you have a disability

If you have a disability then you may be entitled to a Disabled Students Allowance which is money to help with costs you incur in attending your course, as a direct result of your disability. You won't have to pay any of it back. Check out the 'Bridging the Gap 2004/5' which you can get from your LEA, or by calling 0800 731 9133. Or visit the website at www.dfes.gov.uk/studentsupport

Got children or other dependants?

Get extra help

Financial help is available from many people who want to study and who have dependants. For example, students with children may be able to get a Parents' Learning allowance and help with the cost of childcare. Students who have an adult who depends on them financially can get an Adult Dependants' Grant. To find out more, check out the guide 'Childcare Grant and other support for student parents in higher education 2004/5' which is available from your LEA, by calling 0800 731 9133, or from the website at www.dfes.gov.uk/studentsupport
