What steps should education providers consider in order not to discriminate
against disabled people and potential students; and comply with our duties under
Disability Discrimination legislation?
- Establishing a positive policy on the provision of our services to ensure
inclusion of disabled people: communicating this policy to all staff.
- Informing all staff dealing with the public that it is unlawful to discriminate
against disabled people/students. Remember most disability is invisible.
- Training staff to understand the organisation/training centres policy
towards disabled people, our legal obligations and our duty of making reasonable
adjustments.
- Monitoring the implementation and effectiveness of our policy.
- Providing disability awareness/equality training for all staff who have
contact with the public.
- Acts of disability discrimination should be regarded as disciplinary matters.
- Having a student feedback/complaints procedure which is fully accessible;
Alternative formats.
- Consultation with disabled students, and potential students, disabled staff
and disability organisations.
- We must regularly review weather our services are accessible to disabled
people/students.
- Holding a regular review of the effectiveness of reasonable adjustments
made in accordance with the DDA, and acting on the findings of those reviews.
- Providing regular training to staff which is relevant to the adjustment/s
to be made.
