What steps should education providers consider in order not to discriminate against disabled people and potential students; and comply with our duties under Disability Discrimination legislation?

  1. Establishing a positive policy on the provision of our services to ensure inclusion of disabled people: communicating this policy to all staff.
  2. Informing all staff dealing with the public that it is unlawful to discriminate against disabled people/students. Remember most disability is invisible.
  3. Training staff to understand the organisation/training centre’s policy towards disabled people, our legal obligations and our duty of making reasonable adjustments.
  4. Monitoring the implementation and effectiveness of our policy.
  5. Providing disability awareness/equality training for all staff who have contact with the public.
  6. Acts of disability discrimination should be regarded as disciplinary matters.
  7. Having a student feedback/complaints procedure which is fully accessible; Alternative formats.
  8. Consultation with disabled students, and potential students, disabled staff and disability organisations.
  9. We must regularly review weather our services are accessible to disabled people/students.
  10. Holding a regular review of the effectiveness of reasonable adjustments made in accordance with the DDA, and acting on the findings of those reviews.
  11. Providing regular training to staff which is relevant to the adjustment/s to be made.
