RAHILA'S STEPPING STONES TO SUCCESS
In 1995, Rahila Hamid's daughter started nursery and, together
with her sister who had recently moved to Newport form Pakistan,
they decided to look for language skills courses. As there was an
education centre just around the corner from where she lived, Rahila
took up a English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) course.
"I started learning with the ESOL course which I followed
for a few months. The course gave me so much confidence and I went
on to study advanced skills in English," says Rahila who now
works for Newport MIND, one of the partners in the RISE network.

ANDREW'S STORY
Monmouth based Andrew Lewis found learning a bit of a struggle
when he was at school. As a dyslexic, conventional teaching methods
didn't really suit him and he left without the qualifications he
needed to become a youth worker. Since he left school, Andrew believes
there has been a dramatic change in attitudes towards teaching pupils
with dyslexia and new opportunities now exist.
"When I was in school there wasn't the same understanding
there is today of dyslexia and how to overcome it. Thankfully, things
have changed for the better," says the twenty six year old
who has since achieved his ambition of becoming a youth worker at
the The Attik, a drop-in centre for youngsters in Monmouth which
has been identified as one of the RISE Satellite Centres.
